Booking your wedding photographer is a big deal. You’re trusting someone to not only document your wedding day but also help guide you through it. I’m a big believer in clear communication, no surprises, and making sure my couples feel confident and excited from start to finish. These are some of the most important questions to ask your Greenville SC wedding photographer (plus my answers!) I hope they give you peace of mind as you plan.
I recently photographed Robert and Mikal’s wedding at Avenue in downtown Greenville. Their day is the perfect example of how being intentional about who you hire can lead to a celebration that feels effortless, joyful, and completely YOU.
Before you get too far into timelines or gear talk, you should check the vibes. Do you actually enjoy being around your photographer? Would you grab a coffee with them and spill your love story? Because trust me, you’ll spend a LOT of time together.
Your photographer should feel like a calming presence and a teammate. Someone you trust with your most emotional, unfiltered moments. I always tell my couples that how you feel with your photographer will shape how you look in your photos.
When I think about the importance of connection, I think about couples like Robert and Mikal. From our first conversation, it was clear we were aligned in energy, communication, and intention. Their wedding day wasn’t just beautiful. It flowed so naturally because we were on the same page from the start. That’s the magic of finding your right fit.
So when you’re interviewing photographers, ask yourself: Does this person make me feel relaxed, seen, and celebrated?
“We’re not comfortable in front of the camera. Will you pose and direct us?”
Absolutely! Most of my couples feel this way at first, and it’s so normal. I’ll guide you with prompts, gentle direction, and ways to make it feel more like a conversation or a little walk in the park than a posed photoshoot.
“Can you help us plan our engagement session? Like outfits or locations?”
Totally! I love helping my couples plan outfits that reflect their style and feel timeless in their photos. I also curate a custom list of session locations for each couple based on the vibes, style, and preferences.
“What’s your shooting style? Do you mostly pose people or focus on candids?”
I always like to say I am a mixed of posed and prompted, knowing when to provide guidances but also when to take a step back and let a moment happen naturally. My style is true to color, timeless, and joyful. I love capturing moments that feel natural. The in-between giggles, the quiet glances, and candid shots, but also making sure you feel guided and never awkward in front of the camera.
“How many images do you deliver?”
It varies by wedding, but I typically deliver 75–100 images per hour of coverage. Every gallery is curated to tell the full story without compromising on quality or quantity. I am a big believer to delivering all of the best of the best, so there is no cap on the amount of images in your gallery.
“How do you protect our photos after the wedding?”
I backup every single photo in multiple places. First, all images are dual recorded onto 2 memory cards while shooting. Secondly, all images are stored on 2 separate hard drives. Thirdly, I keep the images on the original SD card in a fireproof safe until I have delivered the gallery to you! Losing your images from the most special day is not something I’m willing to leave up to chance. I take image safety seriously and build in multiple layers of backup so nothing is lost.
“Who are your second shooters and how do you select them?”
My second photographers have been vetted and trained on how I approach weddings so they are just as fluent with my client’s day as I am. I only work with experienced professionals who shoot with similar gear and a similar approach to mine. My team of second photographers take on a variety of ELP weddings a year depending on their booking calendars. Many are full-time photographers themselves who I adore and trust completely.
“What happens if there’s an emergency and you can’t photograph our wedding?”
While that’s never happened, I have a trusted network of photographers I’d reach out to immediately, and I’d make sure you’re taken care of with someone I’d trust with my own wedding day. Rest assured, you will not be without a photographer on your wedding day.
“Can we book a videographer or do we need to run it by you first?”
You’re welcome to choose your videographer! I have several that I love working with and am happy to recommend them to you. I love to touch base with videographers before the big day to make sure we’re on the same page about light, movement, and timing so we can collaborate well.
“How do you handle bad weather?”
No matter the weather, I am always keeping your comfort level and safety at the forefront! Whether there is a light drizzle or a torrential downpour, I always have a backup plan and communicate this with my clients prior to their wedding day. Often times, we use covered spaces, indoor backups, or clear umbrellas to still create beautiful photos outdoors. I also promise to help you pivot gracefully with your planner without the stress.
Robert and Mikal’s wedding was so sunny, we made little stops along the way to cool off and catch our breath. It’s those small adjustments that make the whole day feel easy and fun.
When I think back on Robert and Mikal’s day, I don’t just remember the golden light or the gorgeous terrace ceremony. I remember how they looked at each other. I remember their joy and steadiness, their people flying in from all over to celebrate them, and the way they made everyone feel included. THAT is what your photographer should be focused on capturing.
If these answers brought you peace of mind (or sparked more questions!), I’d love to connect and hear about what matters most to you. I’m always here to guide, support, and help make this whole process feel joyful, not stressful. Reach out here and let’s get started!
I am committed to serving you well and delivering a gallery for you to relive for generations to come. It’s my heart to intentionally capture your season of life in an energetic, encouraging, and easy way. Let's joyfully celebrate your season, and genuinely capture the real you.
